This limited-edition Barbados rum belongs to the Planteray Single Cask Collection 2026. It is made from sugar cane molasses at the historic West Indies Rum Distillery, where the molasses ferments for two to three days before being distilled in a column still. The rum was distilled in 2017 and bottled at 49.7% ABV in a 0.7-litre bottle that comes in a gift box.
Its maturation unfolds in three stages. The spirit first spends three years ageing in ex-bourbon casks in tropical conditions, then moves to Ferrand casks in France for a further four years and four months. A final 16-month finish in a former Oloroso sherry cask completes the process, bringing the total cask maturation to eight years and eight months. The sherry casks previously held Spanish Oloroso and add extra influence to the long bourbon and Ferrand ageing.
Planteray, formerly known as Plantation Rum, is part of the French spirits house Maison Ferrand, and Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel is known for the brand's unusual cask combinations. This bottling contains just 2 g of sugar per litre. Pairing tropical ageing in Barbados with continental ageing in France and a Spanish sherry cask finish, it is a rarity of the Single Cask series and an intriguing choice for lovers of cask-aged spirits.
