Westbourne Strength is the higher-proof sibling of Martin Miller's Gin, created in 2003 after mixologists asked for a version with more punch. Martin Miller's Gin itself was first developed in 1998 by British bon viveur Martin Miller and two friends, with the aim of making the first Super Premium Gin. Bottled at 45.2% ABV, this expression puts juniper front and centre, with a richer, spicier mouthfeel than the original and the same soft, gentle finish.
Rather than chasing exotic or secret ingredients, this dry gin relies on a classic botanical line-up. Juniper, coriander, angelica, liquorice root, cassia bark, florentine iris and a little lime peel go into the first distillation. Bitter orange peel, lemon peel and more lime peel follow in a second step, and a touch of cucumber is added to the mix. The gin is distilled in England, then shipped to Iceland, where it is blended down to strength with pure glacial water.
A modern classic built on the best traditions of English distillers, with a twist of its own, it aims for a perfectly balanced gin that, in Martin Miller's words, "tastes like gin". Its extra strength makes it well suited to more complex cocktails, bringing old-school authenticity to the classic repertoire and helping create more flavourful drinks.
Tasting Note
Clear in colour. The nose offers juniper berries, oranges, lemons and coriander. The palate is velvety and smooth yet complex, led by juniper with hints of cinnamon. The finish is long-lasting, fruity and weighty.
